About
Learning to program, with a guide that does not do it for you.
Veileder is an AI guide for learning to program. It helps you think, not copy: it gives hints instead of answers, explains with the course material and shows its sources, and checks your code with real tests.
Why we built it
AI tools can write a working solution in seconds. That is useful for a professional and a problem for a learner: the solution arrives, the understanding does not. Veileder is built the other way round. It is patient, it asks what you have tried, and it gives the next step rather than the last one.
The name is Norwegian: a veileder is a guide or mentor, the person who walks beside you while you find the way yourself.
What makes it different
Hints, not answers
Hints come one step at a time and adapt to your code. A full solution is never handed over.
Grounded in the course
Explanations draw on the course's own chapters and examples, and say where they come from.
Tests decide, not the AI
Your code runs against each task's tests. Whether a task is solved never depends on what a model says.
Reflection built in
After a task, you look back on what worked and what to remember. Your reflections stay with your progress.
How it is built
You talk to one Veileder. Behind it, a small team of AI agents (a tutor, an explainer, a reviewer, a challenger and a reflection coach) each take the questions they are best at. Every answer passes guardrails before you see it. The agents run on a large language model; the course material, the tests and the guardrails are Veileder's own.
For teachers and course designers
A course in Veileder is a set of concepts with chapters, examples, practice tasks with tests, and challenges, in a plain, open format. If you would like to bring your own course, or use Veileder with a class, we would like to hear from you.
Who is behind Veileder
Veileder is developed by a team of professors at NTNU, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, and is used in their own teaching.
